(Japan) ) and Toyota Tsusho jointly announced on February 8 that they have mutually decided to invest and participate in Cassava cassava (kəsä`və) or manioc (măn`ēŏk), name for many species of the genus Manihot of the family Euphorbiaceae (spurge family).  Waste To Energy, a Thai company to be engaged in a clean development mechanism project using biogas bi·o·gas

Specifically, the two Japanese companies have started constructing new facilities for Cassava Waste To Energy, of which Toyota Tsusho and TEPCO own 61% and 19%, respectively.

Cassava Waste To Energy, which will start full-scale operations in December, will collect methane from organic effluent discharged by tapioca starch factories. Accordingly, the company will supply and sell the biogas (i.e. collected methane) to the factories.

In addition, the two Japanese companies have agreed with the Thai company to purchase carbon credits generated from this biogas project. By December 2012, Toyota Tsusho will purchase a total of 360,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent Carbon dioxide equivalent, CO2eq or CO2e, is an internationally accepted measure that expresses the amount of global warming of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that would have the same global warming  (CO2e) while TEPCO will buy a total of 240,000 tons of CO2e.

This is the first time for both companies to directly invest and participate in a biogas-based clean development mechanism project.
