(Japan) ) and Toyota Tsusho jointly announced on February 8 that they have mutually decided to invest and participate in Cassava cassava (kəsä`və) or manioc (măn`ēŏk), name for many species of the genus Manihot of the family Euphorbiaceae (spurge family). Specifically, the two Japanese companies have started constructing new facilities for Cassava Waste To Energy, of which Toyota Tsusho and TEPCO own 61% and 19%, respectively. Cassava Waste To Energy, which will start full-scale operations in December, will collect methane from organic effluent discharged by tapioca starch factories. Accordingly, the company will supply and sell the biogas (i.e. collected methane) to the factories. In addition, the two Japanese companies have agreed with the Thai company to purchase carbon credits generated from this biogas project.
