Tod Sedgwick sells Io Energy to SNL Financial.

Veteran newsletter publisher Tod Sedgwick recently sold his Io Energy LLC, Arlington, Virginia, to SNL Financial LLC, Charlottesville, Virginia, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition combines SNL's strong data base with Io Energy's extensive news operation, whose newsletters go to nearly every company that participates in the North America electric power business. That combination will go under the brand of SNL Energy.

The newsletters include Power Daily North America, Power Daily Northeast, Power Week Canada, Power Week Midwest, Power Week Southeast, Power Week West, Electric Transmission Week, Electric Utility Report, Generation Markets Week, and Eastern Market Report Midday.

SNL president Mike Chinn told NL/NL, "We view the effective combination of data and news as a critical element in dominating the market for sector-specific information. Good data on its own can be powerful and good news on its own can be useful. But the combination of the two, particularly when tied together with good technology, is much more powerful for the end user.

"With regard to Io Energy and how it fits that strategy," Chinn continued, "they built the best news desk in the power business. So we jumped at the opportunity to combine their industry expertise and knowledge with our smaller news desk and significant data resources."

Chinn concluded, "We'll soon be pumping their news content out through our internet delivery systems, combining it with our financial and operating data to create something that is unique in the power and gas space."

Io Energy president Randy Rischard will stay with the company, answering to SNL Energy director Edward Metz.

Sedgwick is prolific publisher of both b-to-b and consumer newsletters

Tod Sedgwick founded Pasha Publications in 1978 and sold its energy titles to Financial Times Energy in 1998, which subsequently sold them to McGraw-Hill. Because of his impressive stewardship of Pasha Publications, he was named Publisher of the Year by the Newsletter & Electronic Publishers Association in 1992. He founded Io Energy in 2002 as a start-up company launching new titles. Of the recent sale, Sedgwick told NL/NL, "I felt that this merger was necessary to take Io Energy to the next level."

Tod's Sedgwick Publishing Company also produces three consumer titles--The Bird Hunting Report and two that go to Episcopal ministers to help them prepare their Sunday services, Synthesis and Synthesis CE--as well as the b-to-b newsletter Business Mailers Review.

Sedgwick's quite varied and eclectic interests also include the following: He is president of Red Hills Lumber Company and serves on the boards of directors of the Folger Shakespeare Library, Wetlands America Trust, an affiliate of Ducks Unlimited, and the Civil War Preservation Trust.
