Toby wins friends by offering to pay for the bar room damages and buy drinks for the house. He then departs only to moments later collapse from a heart attack. Waking up in the office of the town doctor, Toby is informed that he is dying and must adopt a quiet, peaceable peace·a·ble

Toby Ryker is a smoothly written and generally terrific novel that will leave the reader eagerly looking forward to Steven Ulmen's next foray into western fiction.
