Tobacco use among youth. (Trends).


The American Cancer Society American Cancer Society,
n.pr established in 1913, this national volunteer-based health organization is committed to the elimination of cancer through prevention and treatment and to diminishing cancer suffering through advocacy, scholarship, research,
 reports the following:

* Currently, more than 34.8 percent of high school students smoke cigarettes.

* Regardless of racial backgrounds, more male students used smokeless tobacco smokeless tobacco,
n chewing tobacco (leaves) or tobacco powder (snuff) that allows the nicotine to be absorbed through the mucous membrane of the oral cavity or digestive tract. It is related to a high risk of oral cancer.
 than female students; however, white male students used smokeless tobacco more often.

* In comparing tobacco use between male and female high school students nationwide, 17.9 percent of male and 15.6 percent of female students frequently smoked cigarettes.

* Male students were more likely to smoke cigars, cigarillos, or little cigars than female students.
