To bi or not to bi.I am writing to thank Laura Weinstock for her column titled "Lame-duck Lesbians?" in the April 25 issue. I am so glad one of us finally said it! As a young lesbian who has read up on the '70s lesbian movement and celebrates womyn's music, culture, and space, it is astonishing a·ston·ish tr.v. as·ton·ished, as·ton·ish·ing, as·ton·ish·es To fill with sudden wonder or amazement. See Synonyms at surprise. how little we as lesbians have in 2006, both within society at large and in the LGBT LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender community. And it is sad that when lesbians finally have that elusive something that is meant, or so we think, to make us "visible" and give us some recognition, even if it is in cable soap opera form, the constant theme running through it all is "men, men, transsexuals, men," in one way, shape, form, or another. The L Word has lost my support for this season for exactly the reasons that Weinstock touches upon in her essay. JENNIFER CURTIS Milwaukee, Wis. The article by Laura Weinstock complaining that there is too much bisexuality on The L Word is offensive. I am personally delighted that The L Word is including bisexual characters, and that is one of the reasons I am riveted to the show. Bi women have lesbian friends and date lesbians and vice versa VICE VERSA. On the contrary; on opposite sides. . Sexuality is sometimes fluid and doesn't always behave according to identity labels. Although Weinstock claims "I am not antibisexual," she contradicts that when she holds up Queer as Folk Queer as Folk may refer to:
Obviously Weinstock is a throwback throwback see atavism. to the old "get your own parade, community center, T-shirt, button, etc." philosophy that was used for excluding bi and trans people and which caused so much pain in our community. Thankfully, these days most lesbian and gay people lean toward a more unity-focused approach. After all, we're all queer and we're all here. SHEELA LAMBERT New York, N.Y. I wonder if Laura Weinstock ever actually watched QAF. She is incorrect in stating that "not one of its main gay male characters ever slept with a woman." This did happen--twice--in the first season. Justin slept with his best friend at her request--she wanted him to be the first--and then Emmett, after entering an "ex-gay" support group, slept with a lesbian who was also trying to be straight. Also, Weinstock's comment "One of the two lesbians went back to men for a while" is not true. Lindsay had a crush on a male artist, and when he came to her art studio, she caved and had sex with him--one time only. She did not go back to dating men; she cheated with a person she admired, who happened to be male. She realized her mistake and did not date another male. We need to start realizing that sexuality is a fluid thing. I believe the lady doth doth v. I think The L Word stands for love. As a bisexual, I don't feel that I get that from the GLBT GLBT Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered community too which (like it or not, Ms. Weinstock) I belong. I for one am happy to see bisexual women included on The L Word. All hetero hetero prefix, Latin, different or all gay/lesbian TV is just not real life! FLORENCE ENGORAN Melville, N.Y. It's interesting to me that Laura Weinstock is more concerned about the invasion of the yucky bisexuals than she is about the ongoing presentation of "desirable" equaling skeletal. The continual onslaught of marketing skeletal images of emaciated e·ma·ci·ate tr. & intr.v. e·ma·ci·at·ed, e·ma·ci·at·ing, e·ma·ci·ates To make or become extremely thin, especially as a result of starvation. women as beautiful or glamorous is far more damaging to women (including lesbians) than any amount of bisexual characters could ever be.
