Tisch donates $1M to UJA's AIDS initiative.

New York philantropist Jan Tisch, has made a $1 million gift to the UJA-Federation AIDS Initiative, almost half of which will support medical care and supportive services for women with HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States.  and AIDS.

Tisch's gift will expand clinical care and other services for women with HIV infection and AIDS at Beth Israel Medical Center's Peter Krueger Clinic for the Treatment of Immunological Disorders, the first and one of the largest outpatient AIDS clinics in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

Beth Israel plans to use the Tisch gift to expand evening hours at the Krueger Clinic, devoting at least one evening clinic per week solely to the care and treatment of women with HIV. In addition to primary health care, gynecological and obstetrical services, and specialty care, the clinic provides access to clinical drug trials, nutrition services, HIV education and counseling and special care for tuberculosis.

An added feature at the clinic, made possible because of Mrs. Tisch's gift, will be on-site babysitting services for women with AIDS who have young children. For many of these women, keeping doctors' appointments can be difficult, if not impossible, because they have no child care resources.
