Tin-based flame retardant.

Tin-Based Flame Retardant

A new inorganic flame retardant/smoke suppressant that utilizes a tin-based chemistry and targets applications such as PVC PVC: see polyvinyl chloride.

Raymond Shaw, Alcan Chemicals' marketing manager for hydrates, said the new products, known as Flamtard H and Flamtard S, have been engineered to combine with halogenated halogenated

. Flamtard is not considered effective without presence of halogen. Shaw would not elaborate on the proprietary chemistry of the Flamtard products, but it's believed both contain either zinc hydroxystannate (with a 40% tin content) or zinc stannate (with a 50% tin content).

Flamtard is viewed as a low-toxicity replacement for antimony trioxide, according to Shaw. He said Flamtard works in both the vapor and condensed phase, while antimony trioxide is effective only in the vapor phase.

Like antimony trioxide, Flamtard has a low recommended use level of 2-5% in the overall resin system, providing minimal disruption of the resin's physical properties, he said.

Fine-particle Flamtard grades will be priced about $4/lb. They will be produced at Alcan facilities in England. As for the distinction between the two grades, H has a thermal stability up to 260 F, while S goes to about 1000 F.

Besides flexible PVC, Alcan sees applications for Flamtard in thermoset A polymer-based liquid or powder that becomes solid when heated, placed under pressure, treated with a chemical or via radiation. The curing process creates a chemical bond that, unlike a thermoplastic, prevents the material from being remelted. See thermoplastic.  polyester SMC SMC Saint Mary's College

WHY TIN WORKS

According to Arthur J. Killmeyer, technical officer with the Tin Research Institute, Columbus, Ohio, tin functions as a char promoter in the resin substrate in both the vapor and condensed phase. Char is the crust that forms on the surface of the plastic material in a fire, forming a barrier to rob the flame of fuel. Killmeyer said the zinc stannate and hydroxystannate act as effective smoke, flame and carbon monoxide carbon monoxide, chemical compound, CO, a colorless, odorless, tasteless, extremely poisonous gas that is less dense than air under ordinary conditions. It is very slightly soluble in water and burns in air with a characteristic blue flame, producing carbon dioxide;  suppressants when used with brominated resins.

Because of its low-addition levels, Flamtard also can be used as a partial replacement for alumina trihydrate (ATH), which requires much higher filler loading levels. Such a replacement could be a means of improving physical properties of the plastic by reducing the amount of additives. (CIRCLE 99)
