, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 1996--MCI has selected Timeplex Federal Systems to help fulfill the newly-awarded Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  Telecommunications Satellite (FAATSAT FAATSAT Federal Aviation Administration Telecommunications Satellite

) contract.

The 10-year, $15 million subcontract calls for Timeplex Federal to supply MCI (1) (Media Control Interface) A high-level programming interface from Microsoft and IBM for controlling multimedia devices. It provides commands and functions to open, play and close the device.

The hardware, specifically Ascom Timeplex's LINK/2+ multiplexers, will be part of a nationwide satellite communications network that will enhance the flow of radar information and computer navigational and weather data to air traffic control facilities. FAATSAT will also complement the FAA's voice and data communications network.

The LINK/2+ is a full featured, high-performance networking multiplexer. It delivers full integration for a total range of voice, data, and image transmission over T-1/E-1/NTT or lower speed facilities. The LINK/2+ also supports fractional T-1 services that provide substantial cost efficiencies over networks with underutilized T-1 or multiple DDS (1) (Digital Data Storage) See DAT.

"Bandwidth utilization is critical in helping to contain the costs associated with satellite transmissions," said Michael Serbousek, director of FAA Programs, MCI Government Markets. "Timeplex's LINK/2+ multiplexer provides exceptional bandwidth efficiencies that help to keep transmission costs to a minimum."

The LINK/2+ multiplexer is one of the most flexible platforms in the marketplace today. It supports a wide variety of interfaces that are key to satisfying the diverse requirements of the FAA.

"Passenger safety is involved and foremost in the minds of the FAA, so there can be no compromise in network reliability," said Charlie Dykas, vice president and general manager of Timeplex Federal Systems Inc. "The unique distributed intelligence of the LINK/2+ multiplexer prevents any single point of failure within the system which ensures full network operation at all times."
