TimeLogic and Infocom Speed Life Science Patent Approval at the Japan Patent Office with DeCypher Bioinformatics Solution.

Business Editors/Health/Medical Writers

CRYSTAL BAY, Nev. and TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 2003

The Japanese government has awarded a contract to TimeLogic and Infocom for the installation of a new DeCypher(R) Accelerated Bioinformatics Using computers in biological research to analyze or predict the composition of molecules (nucleic acids, proteins, etc.) and model biologic systems. Bioinformatics is most prominent in the Human Genome Project, which has recorded the three billion chemical base pairs that make up the  system at the Japan Patent Office. Sensitive search algorithms In computer science, a search algorithm, broadly speaking, is an algorithm that takes a problem as input and returns a solution to the problem, usually after evaluating a number of possible solutions. , including Smith-Waterman and Framesearch, accelerated to supercomputing speeds through an array of reprogrammable processors in the DeCypher system, provide the means to search through rapidly expanding genomic and protein sequence databases to verify the unique nature of an applicant's submission. "The continued increase for bioinformatics analysis at JPO demonstrates the overall health of the genomics research in Japan," claims Yasuhiro Kuroda, Ph.D. of Infocom's Lifescience Division Bioinformatics Group.

Daniel Naimey, VP of Sales for TimeLogic, commented, "JPO has depended upon TimeLogic's bioinformatics technology since they first implemented DeCypher in February of 1999. This upgrade brings a 30-fold performance improvement over their original system and applies the performance equivalent of thousands of CPUs to over 35 critical bioinformatics tasks." Naimey continued, "Utilizing reconfigurable FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  technology, DeCypher Model XD-8G occupies only the space of two small servers and has minimal power and cooling needs."

"We are proud to have been recognized for the quality of our technology by the Japanese government," remarked Rick MacDonald, TimeLogic's President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "TimeLogic also wishes to recognize the staff of Infocom -- without their quality and expertise, this contract would not have been possible," he added.

About TimeLogic

TimeLogic produces DeCypher, the leading-edge solution for high-throughput computation within life science research. Computationally intensive bioinformatics algorithms -- including BLAST, Smith-Waterman, Framesearch and Hidden Markov Model A hidden Markov model (HMM) is a statistical model in which the system being modeled is assumed to be a Markov process with unknown parameters, and the challenge is to determine the hidden parameters from the observable parameters.  analysis -- are critical for genomic research and drug target identification. TimeLogic reduces these computations from hours to minutes, and multiple months to days, bringing near real-time performance to informatics Same as information technology and information systems.
