Timber: Rob Gregory reviews a number of recent applications of timber.


501 AMERICAN TULIPWOOD

American Tulipwood (Liriodendron Liriodendron: see magnolia.  tulipifera), supplied by Rochester-based Morgan's Timber Yard a yard or place where timber is deposited.

, was used to clad this award-winning intervention in an east London East London, city (1991 pop. 240,474), Eastern Cape, SE South Africa, on the Indian Ocean. The city grew around a British military post founded in 1847. Its harbor was developed from 1886, and today it is a leading South African port.  community church. Chosen by architect Matthew Lloyd
    Matthew James Lloyd (born April 16 1978) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for and is captain of the Essendon Bombers Australian Football League. Widely regarded as the best full-forward currently playing, he is the leading goal scorer of all time for Essendon and
     for its blond appearance, the timber, more commonly known as yellow poplar, was an affordable alternative to the initial proposal to use green oak. The timber is also well suited to forming gentle curves and was installed by Beamfast.

    502 LILLEHEDEN

    The recently completed Kingsmead Primary School by Bristol-based White Design incorporates a distinctive glulaminated frame supplied by Lilleheden. The dominant modular system alludes to the structure's potential for future expansion from seven to 11 classrooms. The use of timber throughout--which includes bamboo flooring and cedar cladding--responds to the aspiration to make the school into an exemplar of sustainable design and construction, with the design team working closely with main contractor Willmott Dixon.

    504 CONSTRUCTIONAL TIMBER

    Thirteen solid timber arched frames, manufactured by Constructional Timber, form the centrepiece to Alec French's recently completed Lambourne-Sheepdrove Biodiversity Centre. Fabricated from 300X300mm sections of home grown Douglas fir Douglas fir: see pine.

    Any of about six species of coniferous evergreen timber trees (see conifer) that make up the genus Pseudotsuga, in the pine family, native to western North America and eastern Asia.
    , each section was individually machined and stabilized by Douglas fir purlins and braces.

    505 ENGLISH OAK

    English Oak was used extensively throughout Michael Hopkins Sir Michael Hopkins CBE RA AADipl (b. May 5 1935 in Poole, Dorset) is an English architect. He studied at the Architectural Association and after working for Frederick Gibberd and a spell in partnership with Norman Foster[1]  & Partners' award-winning Norwich Cathedral visitors' centre. Having received the Gold Award in the 2004 Wood Awards, the scheme is an exemplary demonstration of how new and old can coexist, with timber being expertly used both structurally (fabricated by Constructional Timber) and for internal finishes.

    506 FINNFOREST GLULAM

    Finnforest Glulam has been used by architect Hannele Arantola for Maria's Chapel in Levi, Finland. The structures offer lightweight, efficient and distinctive solutions for mid-span situations.
