Born in a grand manor house in the Irish countryside, Tiger doesn't realize the gravity of the changes in the family fortunes until she is 18 and is sent to Paris by her two older sisters to work as a companion to an elderly countess. There Tiger takes French lessons and art lessons, and she also learns about herself and the emotions, pain and misfortunes of love.

Ward's reading is outstanding. She achieves French, Polish, Irish, and Italian accents for the appropriate characters as Tiger's adventures take her across Europe. Ward captures all the heartbreak of Tiger's first loves--being told that her social status does not warrant her a suitable match, and then finding her art teacher in bed with her sister. The plot covers Tiger's 18th year when she strikes off on her own to pursue her dreams as she matures into womanhood wom·an·hood
