Three very different companies have been recognized for making strides toward a common goal: improving the work force and economic development opportunities in Lane County.

Before an audience of about 200 people at the Valley River Inn on Thursday Thursday: see week. , the Lane Workforce Partnership and Lane Metro Partnership gave the 2007 Business Workforce Awards to Comcast, a cable TV company and Internet service provider Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.
; Eugene Sign & Awning; and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, which operates a customer contact center in Springfield.

Comcast employs more than 125 people in north Eugene. It offers generous employee benefits, including up to $5,250 for workers to complete an approved undergraduate or graduate degree.

The company also was praised for its charitable giving.

Another award winner, Eugene Sign & Awning, was founded in Eugene in 1965. It now has 50 full-time employees, earning an average wage of $24.50 an hour. The company operates a 30,000 square-foot manufacturing facility on Oak Patch Road in west Eugene, and is planning a $4 million expansion in west Eugene.

The third award recipient was Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.'s customer contact center in Springfield's Gateway Area. The company has 350 employees and plans to grow to 1,000 employees. Workers' pay starts at $9.53 a hour and they can qualify for a bonus after 90 days. Royal Caribbean employees qualify for a full benefit package, including some unusual benefits, such as cruise discounts.
