Thousands go on secure register.

Companies House has reported that the secure directors' register, established in April 2002, now holds the names of 4,792 people. The list was set up to provide confidentiality for directors who believe they are at risk from militant groups as a result of their companies' activities. Most people on the register are in firms that have been targeted by extreme animal rights groups--for example, Huntingdon Life Sciences, which was dropped as an audit client by Deloitte last year. Directors considering themselves at risk should apply to Companies House for inclusion. The risk assessment is made by the police. High-profile victims of militant action include Manchester United director Maurice Watkins, whose property has been subjected to attacks by supporters opposed to the sale of the football club.
