This novel about the Holocaust Holocaust (hŏl`əkôst', hō`lə–), name given to the period of persecution and extermination of European Jews by Nazi Germany.  relies on flashbacks and the memories of a mother and daughter. Anna is a young woman when Nazism takes hold in her native Germany and she experiences the gradual dissolution Act or process of dissolving; termination; winding up. In this sense it is frequently used in the phrase dissolution of a partnership.

The dissolution of a contract is its Rescission by the parties themselves or by a court that nullifies its binding force and reinstates each
 of her world. She falls in love with a Jewish doctor and when she becomes pregnant. she takes refuge with the local baker. This woman secretly works for the Resistance and Anna takes over her business and her underground work when she dies. Anna is forced into a relationship with a high-ranking German officer in order to protect the life of her young daughter. When the war ends, Anna marries a kind-hearted but taciturn tac·i·turn

 Minnesota farmer. She never speaks of her past. Her daughter Trudy becomes a professor of history and is involved in a study of the reactions and behavior of German civilians during the war.

The listener alternately learns about Anna's past and Trudy's present until the two stories merge. Toren does an excellent job reading the story of the two women with stoicism Stoicism (stō`ĭsĭzəm), school of philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium (in Cyprus) c.300 B.C.
