A lifelong New Yorker, William Thompson began his career in New York overseeing constituent services for a Congressman and then became his Chief of Staff. In 1983 he was appointed Brooklyn's youngest Deputy Borough President Borough President (informally BP, or Beep in slang) is an elective office in each of the five boroughs of New York City. The offices of borough president were created in 1898 with the formation of the City of Greater New York. . In his ten years in that capacity he served on the Board of Estimate and as a Trustee on the New York City Employee's Retirement System, the city's largest pension fund. In the early 1990's Thompson served as a senior vice president for an investment banking firm. In 1994 Thompson was appointed to the New York City Board of Education and in 1996 he was elected to serve as president. He also served as a Trustee for the Board of Education Retirement System. As president of the New York City Board of Education, Thompson accomplished unprecedented educational reforms. He increased accountability, raised standards and improved reading scores. He fought for fair funding and gave the public access to the Board of Education's books to enable New Yorkers to see how the $11 billion budget is spent. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation and the City Parks Foundation City Parks Foundation is a New York City-based non-profit dedicated to the improvement of urban parks and neighborhoods through programming in parks, including athletic instruction for youth and seniors, performing arts, and education programs, all offered free of charge, and .
