Thomas F. Witheridge, Ph.D. Appointed Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Minnesota
The Mental Health Association of Minnesota is a statewide not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with mental illnesses and promoting mental health.
About his hopes for the future of the Mental Health Association, Dr. Witheridge states, "I am enormously proud to be a part of this Association, with its excellent reputation for strong leadership in the public policy, advocacy and education arenas.
"Together with our members, we bear the torch in Minnesota for a broad-based advocacy movement, founded in the early years of this century by a remarkable ex-patient, Clifford W. Beers, who demonstrated the possibility of recovery to a disbelieving world.
"With managed care, welfare reform, underfunded services, cost shifting, and a host of other critical issues staring us in the face, we need a strong Association today more than ever before.
"In the next few years, we will concentrate on broadening our advocacy and our education efforts. And we will continue to convey our message of hope about people with mental illnesses:
-- Adults with serious mental illnesses can and do recover, and
-- Children with serious neurobiological and emotional problems can and do
return to the path of healthy development."
Dr. Witheridge comes to the Mental Health Association from Dakota County Community Services, where he was Manager, Adult Mental Health Services (1992-1997). Prior to that, he was the Associate Director of Thresholds and the Director of the Bridge Program in Chicago, where he developed a nationally recognized assertive outreach program for adults with mental illnesses who were frequently hospitalized, homeless, and/or deaf. Dr. Witheridge holds his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Northwestern University.
