Ten Years Ago (1996) * Monsanto's Bollgard gene receives EPA approval. The company names its Bt corn Yieldgard and is still under EPA review. * Webb Publishing completes the acquisition of the Farm Press publications from Argus. * DowElanco and Mycogen sign agreements for Mycogen to acquire DowElanco's United AgriSeeds (formerly Lynks and Keltgen brands) and for DowElanco to take a 46 percent stake in Mycogen. * Gil Spears retires as dir. of advtg sales at Successful Farming magazine. Tom Davis is named his successor. * CAMA (Central Automatic Message Accounting) See AMA. names Ginty Jocius its Agri-Marketer of the Year. * Red River Network begins operations in Grand Forks Grand Forks, city (1990 pop. 49,425), seat of Grand Forks co., E N.Dak., at the confluence of the Red and the Red Lake rivers; inc. 1881. In a spring wheat, livestock, and farm area, the city has grain elevators, state-operated flour mills, and plants that process and distribute meat, dairy products, sugar beets, and potatoes. The area was settled by French fur traders who camped at the river junction and called their campsite La Grandes Fourches [Fr., ND. Twenty Years Ago (1986) * Pioneer and American Cyanamid announce a new cooperative agreement to develop corn hybrids which are resistant to Cyanamid's imidazolinone family of compounds. * Massey Ferguson divests its combine unit. MF owns 40 percent of the new company with lenders and "other parties" owning the remainder. * International Harvester changes its name to Navistar. The IH symbol is sold to Tenneco as part of its purchase of the farm equipment business. |
