"X-Chromosome's Animating Women," Oxygen's intimate look at the making of the animated series "X-Chromosome" will premiere October 31 at 10 p.m., and will be broadcast online simultaneously at www.oxygen.com. The two-hour special was shot entirely with a digital video camera by Oxygen's head of animation Kit Laybourne, and offers viewers an in-depth look at the different animated serials featured on Oxygen's award-winning "X-Chromosome," as well as a look at the people who bring them to life.

"X-Chromosome" has won awards for it's groundbreaking work, for both creative and technological achievements, since it's launch earlier this year. Drawn From Life, created by Paul Fierlinger, won the Grand Prize for Best Commissioned Film at the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2000. The Ruth Truth, Oxygen Media's animated interactive detective serial created specifically to live both online and on television, swept Shockwave.com's World Internet Animation Competition winning the Grand Prize and the "Mixed-Media produced for the web" award, also appears on "X-Chromosome."

The animated series featured in the special include:

-- Avenue Amy - An animated look at the life of twenty-something hipsters
looking for love and happiness in New York, Amy is a 23-year-old woman who is
constantly on the prowl for love, or at least for some lovin.' The special
takes an look inside the Amy process - we see Co-Creators, Amy Sohn, the former
New York Press columnist on which the series is based, and Joan Raspo, who also
serves as director, as they go about filming one of the episodes, going from
real actors in front of a green screen to what the Technical Director likes to
call "stylized cartooned live animation."

-- Drawn From Life - A fresh form of portraiture, Drawn from Life conveys that
the ordinary can be illustrated -- literally and figuratively -- in an
extraordinary manner. Every woman has a story to tell, and in each 2-minute
episode of Drawn From Life, an everyday woman relates hers. In the special we
meet Paul Fierlinger as he explains how he draws a scene and he and his wife
Sandra, the colorist, discuss their working life together. To give the series a
characteristic look, Sandra came up with a way to paint backgrounds and
characters in a style which is unmatched by computer-rendered graphics, using
Windows NT instead of film. All images are drawn with a pencil on paper by
creator and animator Paul Fierlinger, and scenes are compiled with many
drawings stacked up on top of each other and scanned into computer.

-- Hey Monie - The story of the friendship between two African-American Women.
Simone ("Monie") and her best friend and downstairs neighbor, Yvette are voiced
by two comediennes who are best friends in real life. Borrowing from the
award-winning Dr. Katz technique of retroscripting, the actors improvise their
dialog from constructed story lines. In the end, two hours of raw comedy gets
edited down over 10 days. Hey Monie utilizes Squigglevision, Tom Synder
Productions' patented style of animation. The special features Creator,
Producer, and Director Lisa Gillim, along with Angela Shelton who plays Monie,
and Frances Callier as Yvette. They discuss the origin of the series, the
character's roles and we see them improvising a scene from one of the episodes.


-- Bitchy Bits - A viciously true, insightful bit of life as lived by our
protagonist, Midge McCracken. Midge is a raw nerve, a hormonally incorrect,
self-justifying, suspicious, angry mirror of a dysfunctional world. And that's
when she's trying to be nice. Bitchy Bits is based on the award-winning
comic-book series "Naughty Bits" by cartoonist Roberta Gregory and features
comedienne and SNL alum Laura Kightlinger as the voice of Midge and well known
character actor Harvey Fierstein as the voice of her mom. It is drawn in
traditional, 2-D animation, featuring snappy pose-to-pose movement. The special
spies on a recording session with Kightlinger and Fierstein, followed by an
interview with both, as well as co-creator Caroline Maria.

-- Fat Girl - Welcome to the life of Kate Bloom: a warm-hearted, funny,
intelligent fat girl living in Los Angeles. The special features an interview
with two of the co-creators, Executive Producer and Director Prudence Fenton,
and Art and Music Director Allee Willis. They discuss the motivation behind the
series and give us a look at how some of it is created. Fat Girl begins with
hand-painted characters, backgrounds and props, then the art is digitized into
the computer, color-corrected, composited, cut apart, and finally manipulated
to create animated paintings.

-- Pink Palace - Baby, a 16-year-old Filipina transplant finding her bearings
in America. This is her story from her point of view. The special features an
interview with writer/co-creator Jessica Hagedorn who tells us about her
intentions in creating this series and gives us some insights into the
characters she created. Pink Palace is created with a combination of
traditional animation techniques and digital inking, painting and compositing
technologies.
