Third Quarter 2006 Marks Record Growth for NEC's Worldwide Optical Networking Business.NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98). NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd. Experienced The Greatest Revenue Growth Among Top 10 Optical Networking Vendors according to Ovum-RHK's Year-To-Date Market Share Report For Q3 2006 HERNDON, Va. -- The Optical Network Systems Division (ONSD ONSD Optional Network Specific Digit ) of NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a premier provider of IT, network and telephony solutions, announced today that according to Ovum-RHK, a leading market research firm that targets telecom equipment and component vendors, NEC experienced the greatest sequential revenue growth worldwide for Q3 2006, and also had the highest sequential revenue growth among the top-10 optical networking (ON) vendors in the global market. Ovum-RHK's report titled, "Market Alert: 3Q06 Global ON," recognizes NEC's overall strong global performance, marking a 55 percent revenue growth from Q2 2006, and a 34 percent revenue increase over Q3 2005. NEC saw growth across all geographic regions and product markets. "Global optical networking sales reached nearly $3.1 billion in 3Q06, the highest quarterly spending since 1Q02. Spending growth is coming from a number of sources, including mobile backhaul, broadband aggregation and backhaul, the influx of video traffic, and the move of network operators to converge their networks over a single optical infrastructure," said Dana Cooperson, vice president and practice leader, Network Infrastructure, Ovum-RHK. "In the third quarter, NEC posted the largest sequential revenue growth of the top ten ON vendors. NEC's gains came from increased backbone DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. The report also found that North American spending in optical networks outpaced the other regional markets, topping US$1 billion for the third quarter in a row. In addition, the Ovum-RHK report highlights North American spend was once again broad-based, with metro and backbone Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM. "NEC's efforts in 2006 with regards to customer engagements and product-line expansions are being recognized with these strong third quarter results," said Rocky Kler, vice president and general manager, ONSD, NEC. "We believe this momentum is reflected in Ovum-RHK's market share report, which emphasizes that carriers continue to select NEC's optical networking solutions on a global basis as the foundation for their next generation networks."
