Things are bound to get crazy at the Man Man show.

Byline: Serena Markstrom The Register-Guard

In Seal's version of Darwinism, Man Man would live longer than an Okinawan.

Remember when the scar-faced pop star sang "We're never gonna survive unless/ We get a little crazy"?

POP NOTES

For a heavy helping of experimental - dare we say it, at risk of offending the mental health advocates - crazy rock, go to the WOW Hall on Monday for a show featuring Man Man. Opening will be Caves and locals the Tiffany Lamps.

Maybe it's the combo of Caves and Man Man that's got us thinking about evolution. But it may be, too, that the indie press thinks Man Man represents a musical evolution in the right direction.

In a mixed review of "Six Demon Bag," the All Music Guide said some of the Man Man sound "almost borders on accessible." But the critic admits Man Man's "circus-of-insanity live show" created quite a buzz two years ago at South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.

Meanwhile, the reviewer for Tiny Mix Tapes defends the band, while expressing annoyance with its whole rowdy, crazy image.

"Man Man aren't a flock of miscreants; they're a bunch of kids who love to play dress-up," the review says. "They don't align themselves with the (Tom) Waitsian ethos as much as they appropriate select elements of its style and form and assimilate them into a more amiable brand of oddball indie-pop."

Natalia Zukerman

Saturday, Luna

Natalia Zukerman - record label owner, muralist, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter - will play an early show Saturday at Luna, 30 E. Broadway.

Zukerman "has a sound that's strong yet delicate, gentle yet insistent," a news release says. "You can call the music she makes folk if you want, but there's jazz in it, too, and blues, and a soulful something or other that you can't quite put into words."

Zukerman comes from a family of musicians, and she grew up studying classical violin. When she first heard a classical violinist play the fiddle in a bluegrass bluegrass, any species of the large and widely distributed genus Poa, chiefly range and pasture grasses of economic importance in temperate and cool regions. After graduating from college, Zukerman started writing her own songs. She is on her third album, "Only One," released last year.

The show starts at 7 p.m. for $12 at the door. Advance tickets are available today for $10.

Another $5 will get you into the late show featuring accomplished teen musicians Ben Rice and the Youth of Blues. That show begins at 9 p.m.

Hot Club Sandwich

Saturday, Sam Bond's

Those of you who are shrewd calendar watchers may have noticed that Hot Club Sandwich was at the Axe and Fiddle earlier this week. But the rest of you have another chance to see the band Saturday at Sam Bond's Garage.

The music is inspired by Django Reinhardt Jean "Django" Reinhardt (January 23, 1910 – May 16, 1953) was a Belgian Sinto Gypsy jazz guitarist. Conflict

Wednesday, WOW Hall

Political punk rock. Now there's a phrase you just don't hear as much as you once did.

Conflict champions animal rights, peace and human rights. They are "considered the kings of the anarcho-punk genre," according to a news release.

To say Conflict has been around since 1980 would confuse people who know the band has been around forever. John Weinland

Wednesday, Cozmic Pizza

Local band the Comforters shares some stage time with a Portland singer-songwriter's folk band, John Weinland, for an evening of acoustic tunes.

The Comforters' Pia Robbins sent the following summary of her band: "Think Neil Young meets Iron and Wine."

As for the headliners, John Weinland Shearer writes and sings the songs, and he plays the guitar and some piano. The rest of the band's instrumenta- tion includes dobro, mandolin mandolin (măn'dəlĭn`, măn`dəlĭn'), musical instrument of the lute family, with a half-pear-shaped body, a fretted neck, and a variable number of strings, plucked with the fingers or with a plectrum. , vibes, lap steel, accordion, bass, drums, percussion, banjo banjo, stringed musical instrument, with a body resembling a tambourine. The banjo consists of a hoop over which a skin membrane is stretched; it has a long, often fretted neck and four to nine strings, which are plucked with a pick or the fingers.  and keyboards.

That's a lot of music for no cover charge, although donations will be accepted at the door.

Bassnectar may be the less familiar name of the two electronic music acts headlining Thursday at the WOW Hall. Zilla - featuring percussionist Michael Travis of the almost-disbanded String Cheese Incident - has been through town a few times in recent years.

Ten years into his underground career, Bassnectar released the double-disc collection "Mesmerizing mes·mer·ize

Next up for Bassnectar is "Underground Communica- tion," which comes out in May.
