Thompson's rationale for picking such locales is that the tropics tropics, also called tropical zone or torrid zone, all the land and water of the earth situated between the Tropic of Cancer at lat. 23 1-2°N and the Tropic of Capricorn at lat. 23 1-2°S. receive the majority of the sun's radiation and thus their glaciers hold the greatest evidence of increasing temperatures. Bowen describes in detail the feats of engineering and physical stamina necessary for these arduous high-altitude expeditions, as well as the record of melting and warming that the scientists have traced in ice cores. These results, the author concludes, support assertions that the planet has warmed unusually during the past century and that human activity is the cause.
