RTM AND SPRAY-UP Two firms will show new equipment for the fast-developing field of RTM (resin transfer molding). Venus-Gusmer, Kent, Wash., will show its new pneumatic booking press. Hydraulic presses suitable for RTM and SRIM n. 1. Scum; refuse. will be shown by Linden Industries, Inc., Peninsula, Ohio (they're built by Wemhoner in Germany). And High-Tech Engineering Inc., Grand Rapids, Mich., will display its recently introduced Quantum Flow metering unit. The latter provides hydraulic metering at ratios from 100:1 to 1:1. It can be equipped with a RIM-type, high-pressure impingement mixing head for flushless operation. Venus-Gusmer will show an hydraulic-powered RTM metering system introduced in 1991. Venus-Gusmer is also exhibiting a system for spray-up and pouring that may interest thermoformers of tubs, spas, and shower stalls. The recently introduced MBF-01 Mechanically Blended Foam system appears to solve past problems in spraying thermoset polyester foams (see PT, Nov. '93, p. 62; Jan. '94, p. 31). This system uses no toxic chemicals; instead, nitrogen or carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure. is mechanically blended with resin under pressure as part of a continuous catalyzing and dispensing operation. There is little modification to standard polyester formulations and consequently no added sensitivity to ambient conditions and no additional exotherm to prevent spraying up thick layers of foam in a single pass. Spuhl Anderson Machine Co., Chaska, Minn., plans to display its new MD-705 two-component dispensing machine. It's designed for low-volume dispensing of silicone, polyurethane, and epoxy at flow rates from 0.3 to 100 g/sec. Applications can include gasketing, bonding, and small-parts molding. THERMOSET INJECTION NEWS As noted in the Injection Molding section of this show preview, Bucher Inc., Buffalo Grove, III., and Hull Finmac, Warminster, Pa., will show new thermoset injection presses. Both Bucher and Krauss-Maffei Corp., Florence, Ky., will display machines with new polyester BMC stuffing equipment. One Fahr Bucher press handles BMC packed in metal canisters, reducing styrene sty·rene n. A colorless oily liquid from which polystyrenes, plastics, and synthetic rubber are produced. Also called vinylbenzene. emissions. One of Bucher's machines will operate as an integrated system together with a new Model SBS See Small Business Server. 1200 deflasher from Hunziker of Switzerland. The deflasher is designed for small thermoset parts and features high throughput rates (up to 80,000 parts/hr) and a reportedly energy-saving centrifugal blasting wheel. In related news, Bucher recently became a sales agent for thermoset injection molds from Northern Illinois Mold Corp., Huntley, III. NEW DOUBLE-BELT PRESSES Hymmen International Inc., Atlanta, will exhibit a new series of double-belt presses designed for the continuous production of thermoset decorative laminates. The six new presses feature improved electronic features for controlling pressure and temperature.
