in failing prop shaft boots. Arnitel, a family of thermoplastic copolyester elastomers, is said to combine the strength and processing characteristics of engineering plastics with the performance of thermoset A polymer-based liquid or powder that becomes solid when heated, placed under pressure, treated with a chemical or via radiation. The curing process creates a chemical bond that, unlike a thermoplastic, prevents the material from being remelted. See thermoplastic.  elastomers, providing benefits in processing and productivity, according to the literature. As thermoplastics, they do not require vulcanization vulcanization (vŭl'kənəzā`shən), treatment of rubber to give it certain qualities, e.g., strength, elasticity, and resistance to solvents, and to render it impervious to moderate heat and cold.  to obtain their optimal properties, which is said to lead to substantial reductions in part cost. Relative to other elastomers, Arnitel is said to offer the most consistent performance over its entire operating temperature range since its properties vary little from low to high temperature extremes, according to the literature. Arnitel EB464 is said to provide the optimum balance of low temperature properties, chemical resistance and heat stability with minimal abrasion against the shaft. Direct contact with the metal or thermoset prop shaft and insufficient lubrication lubrication, introduction of a substance between the contact surfaces of moving parts to reduce friction and to dissipate heat. A lubricant may be oil, grease, graphite, or any substance—gas, liquid, semisolid, or solid—that permits free action of  can quickly result in a hole in the boot, according to the literature. (DSM 1.
