Thermoplastic composite is stronger, lighter.

A new thermoplastic composite sheet is claimed to have twice the impact resistance of thermoset A polymer-based liquid or powder that becomes solid when heated, placed under pressure, treated with a chemical or via radiation. The curing process creates a chemical bond that, unlike a thermoplastic, prevents the material from being remelted. Sheet properties include multi-axial impact strength of 4.5 to 38.9 ft-lb, tensile strength of 33,500 psi, elongation of 2.6%, tensile modulus of 1.5 million psi, and density of 1.4 g/cc. Thermal expansion coefficient is comparable to that of aluminum.

A 0.080-in thick sheet is claimed to be lighter and significantly tougher than plywood. Versitex is priced competitively vs. thermoset FRP. Thicknesses of 0.040 to 0.200 in. and widths up to 108 in. are available. It is typically supplied in bulk coils up to 1200 ft long. Tel: (724) 776-4044 * www.bulitex.com
