The goal of the project is to demonstrate the application of the Thermatrix proprietary flameless thermal oxidation In microfabrication, thermal oxidation is a way to produce a thin layer of oxide (usually silicon dioxide) on the surface of a wafer (semiconductor). The technique forces an oxidizing agent to diffuse into the wafer at high temperature and react with it.  technology to treat the exhaust of a diesel locomotive owned by the MBTA and in which the technology performance can be validated and its cost-effectiveness evaluated for this particular application.

The parties are to seek additional partnerships or funding sources who may support various elements of the demonstration program. As well as validating the performance of the Thermatrix technology, the program calls for demonstrating the integration of various NOx reduction technologies to achieve as complete a destruction as possible of all the undesirable components contained in the diesel engine emission exhaust.

"We have been working for sometime with the Massachusetts Strategic Envirotechnology Partnership (STEP) whose goal is to aggressively identify and support the development and use of new environmental technologies on a pathway to ultimate commercial viability and application in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," said John T. "We have applied for, and have received verification as a 'STEP Company,' and we have, in conjunction with STEP, identified this application as having a high priority in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We believe the cooperation of MBTA with its extensive knowledge and maintenance of diesel engines, both for locomotives and buses, will be of great technical assistance in this project and utilizing the University of Massachusetts The system includes UMass Amherst, UMass Boston, UMass Dartmouth (affiliated with Cape Cod Community College), UMass Lowell, and the UMass Medical School. Full details of the technical program are currently being finalized. The EOEA will be responsible for assessing the environmental performance of the technology.

STEP is a partnership comprised of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, the Massachusetts Office of Economic Development and the University of Massachusetts. The MBTA, headquartered in Boston, is the sixth largest mass transit system in the United States. It serves a population of over 2.6 million in 78 cities and towns with an area of over 1100 square miles.
