The comically and lyrically gifted songwriter Jonathan Richman Jonathan Richman (born 16 May 1951) is an American proto-punk musician. He is known for his wide-eyed, near-childlike lyrical outlook, and music that, while rooted in 1950s rock and roll structures, can be wildly eclectic.  will be back in town for an 8:30 p.m. performance Wednesday at the WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave.

Richman founded the proto-punk band the Modern Lovers in the 1970s before launching his solo career. He is still fondly remembered for his appearance as the balladeer in the film "There's Something About Mary."

He's touring in support of his new best-of collection, recently released on Rounder Records Rounder Records, originally of Cambridge, Massachusetts but now based in Burlington, is an independent record label founded in 1970 by Ken Irwin, Bill Nowlin and Marian Leighton-Levy, while all three were still university students. . Richman will be joined by his drummer, Tommy Larkins.

Markus James Markus James Klepaski is the current bassist for the rock group Breaking Benjamin, and the former member of the rock band Lifer, and along with Aaron Fink, he joined Breaking Benjamin before the band had a record deal. , a West African-inspired San Francisco singer-songwriter, will open the show with a hand from Malian multi-instrumentalist Mamadou Sidibe. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.

Also at the WOW Hall this weekend is the New Year, a five-piece rock band featuring former members of Bedhead. The show happens at 8:30 p.m. today.

Pedro the Lion Pedro the Lion was an indie rock band from Seattle, Washington, and, for over a decade, the main creative outlet of singer/songwriter David Bazan. , an Athens, Ga., band featuring Josh McKay from the indie-rock act Macha, will help open the show. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.

Season to Risk, a Kansas City, Mo., punk rock band, will be the featured out-of-town guests at the Iron Chef Battle of the Bands, a "rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music.  potluck" that begins at 10 p.m. today at the Samurai Duck, 990 Oak St.

The cook-off also features local stars the Pass Out Kings and Activator. Jumbo Killcrane, a group that supposedly sounds a lot like Tad and the Melvins, also will perform. The cover is $4.

The Sugar Beets will celebrate 12 years of making psychedelic bluegrass bluegrass, any species of the large and widely distributed genus Poa, chiefly range and pasture grasses of economic importance in temperate and cool regions. In general, bluegrasses are perennial with fine-leaved foliage that is bluish green in some species.  this weekend with two shows at Sam Bond's Garage, 407 Blair Blvd.

Today, the Beets play with Matt Butler, a former member of the now-defunct group Jambay. On Saturday, they will take the stage after the group Knuckle Sandwich. The $7 shows start at 9:30 p.m. both nights.

The folk duo Adam + Kris will hit the stage at Cafe Paradiso, 115 W. Broadway, at 9 p.m. Saturday. The cover is $6.

Paul DeLay will bring his harp-driven blues band to the Wild Duck Music Hall, 169 W. Sixth Ave., on Saturday for a 9:30 p.m. show.

Tickets are $10 day of show.

Myshkin also will perform. The cover is $4 to $8 on a sliding scale.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy, also known as Appalachian indie rocker Will Oldham, will hit Sam Bond's Garage at 9 p.m. Wednesday for a rare appearance.

When he's not changing his name, Oldham is busy changing up his musical styles, going from camp fire ballad to rock song to gospel tune before the audience can catch its breath.

The cover for this sure-to-be- eccentric show is $8.
