Vienna Urtext was founded in 1972 as a joint effort of publishing houses B. Schott's Sohne (now Schott Musik International) of Mainz, Germany, and Universal Edition of Vienna, Austria. Vienna Urtext seeks to recapture a composer's original intentions through critical editions. Its work in restoring the most important classical works to their true origins has resulted in a large catalog of performing editions, complete with background information, critical notes on editorial decisions and an overview of performance techniques from the relevant period.

Vienna Urtext is most widely known for its publication of the complete piano sonatas Noun 1. piano sonata - a sonata for piano

 of Beethoven, based upon the work of Heinrich Schenker Heinrich Schenker (June 19, 1868 - January 13, 1935) was a music theorist, best known for his approach to musical analysis, now usually called Schenkerian analysis.

Schenker was born in Wisniowczyki in Galicia in Austria-Hungary (now Ternopil oblast, Ukraine).
