The royal commissions of inquiry and other investigations into government scandal convened in Western Australia during the period under examination (1991-2004) were of significantly greater number than in earlier eras, prompting Peachment (Institute of Public Administration, Australia Australia (ôstrāl`yə), smallest continent, between the Indian and Pacific oceans. With the island state of Tasmania to the south, the continent makes up the Commonwealth of Australia, a federal parliamentary state (2005 est. pop. ) to declare that analysis of this unique period holds important lessons for government and politics in Australia. He presents 11 case studies of the various investigations, preceded by four papers discussing more general topics such as the role of the media in covering the scandals, the role of counsels in assisting the commissions, and the relative impact of commission recommendations.
