The worksite fitness movement.A growing number of companies are offering fitness programs for their employees. Twenty-two percent of companies with more than 50 employees provide a physical fitness program, and the larger the company the more likely it is to offer a program. For example, 54 percent of companies with more than 750 employees offer employee fitness programs compared to 15 percent with 50 to 100 employees. Both the company and the employees benefit from a wellness program. Employees gain personal benefits, including disease prevention, improved physical performance, and a positive mental outlook. The employer gains a more productive workforce with lower medical and health-care costs. (See related article on page 10.)
