Byline: The Register-Guard

Ten Eugene students will be honored for their winning essays at tonight's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts The Hult Center for the Performing Arts is a performing arts facility in Eugene, Oregon, opened in 1982.

27 architectural firms competed for the opportunity to design the Center, but in the end the Eugene City Council awarded the contract to the New York firm of Hardy
.

The winners in the high school division are:

Katy Bogart, 10th grade, South Eugene High School South Eugene High School is a public high school located in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It was founded as Eugene High School around 1900, and was located at Willamette Street and West 11th Avenue in a brick building that later served as Eugene's city hall.  - first prize

Juterh Nmah, 11th grade, Willamette High School Willamette High School is a school in Eugene, Oregon.

Willamette, or "Wil-Hi," is located in the Bethel-Danebo area of west Eugene, and is the only high school in the Bethel School District.
 - second prize

The middle school division:

Roseann Proctor, eighth grade, Jefferson Middle School Jefferson Middle School is a middle school located in Jefferson City, Tennessee. The middle school is home to the football team the Elks, which has won more conference champs than any other middle school in Tennessee.  - first prize (tie)

Katie Parker, eighth grade, Jefferson - first prize (tie)

Sagamore Blakely, eighth grade, Jefferson - second prize (tie)

Keenan Keeley, eighth grade, Jefferson - second prize (tie)

Kana Hammon, sixth grade, Roosevelt Middle School - honorable mention

Amantha Kuhn, eighth grade, Jefferson - honorable mention

Patrick Tutt, eighth grade, Jefferson - honorable mention

The elementary school division:

Hannah Foster, fourth grade, Danebo Elementary School - first prize

The essay contest was sponsored by the Eugene School District Eugene School District (4J) is a public school district in the U.S. state of Oregon. It serves the city of Eugene Elementary schools
  • Adams Elementary School
  • Alternative Kindergarten
  • Awbrey Park Elementary School
  • Bertha Holt Elementary School
 Multicultural/Equity Office, with support from Skipping Stones magazine, the Eugene Education Association Minority Affairs and Human and Civil Rights committees and the Racism Free Zone. The contest was open to all Eugene and Bethel students in kindergarten through grade 12.
