Dear Teacher

In this issue of JS we introduce students to 14-year-old Choi Soo-hyang (cha-way sue-he-ong), a North Korean teen, and Lee Yungoo (yoon-goo), 15, who lives with his family in Seoul. Soo-hyang's extended family of 21 fled North Korea last August in a small fishing boat.

Our reporter came back with a troubling account of the poverty, unemployment, and alcoholism alcoholism, disease characterized by impaired control over the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Alcoholism is a serious problem worldwide; in the United States the wide availability of alcoholic beverages makes alcohol the most accessible drug, and alcoholism is  that grip many reservations, but there is also hope that the next generation of Sioux can preserve their culture, language, and traditions.

As we went to press, the U.S. and Britain were continuing their negotiations about an attack on Iraq with members of the UN Security Council. In the event of war, you can count on JS to bring you comprehensive coverage geared especially for your students.
