The twelve gifts of Christmas.

What could be more fun than getting twelve small surprise gifts on the twelve days prior to Christmas? This is just what Amberly Collins did for her new mother-in-law, Gail Collins. She had so much fun putting together special personalized gifts and having them secretly delivered each day. And Gall won't soon forget the thoughtfulness of each unique present.

With a little advance planning, anyone can copy this memorable holiday idea. Be creative when thinking of items to represent each day. For example, we used adorable a·dor·a·ble

plates decorated with hens to represent the "three French hens;" for the "eight maids a-milking," we substituted eight holiday mugs packed with milk and all the fixings for coffee and hot chocolate.

With some suggestions on how you, too, can give the 12 days of Christmas to someone you love, here is our version of the traditional songs:

As I was planning this article and pulling together the things for our pictures, I was reminded again about the hospitality of our wonderful Mississippi and the delightful people we meet working with Mississippi Magazine. Mississippi is indeed a great place filled with great people. Margaret Ann Forrester of Paper Place in Ridgeland found the three precious French hens on plates; Marsha Rose Davis of Obbie's Cakes and Chocolates in Jackson made seven pastry swans with just a phone call; Kaye's Hallmark Shop in Ridgeland provided crowns for the frog lords a-leaping; Melanie Taylor found nutcrackers, eggs, and ballet shoes Ballet shoes, or ballet slippers, are specially designed lightweight shoes for ballet dancing. Ballet shoes are soft shoes worn by ballet dancers until their bones are ossified and their muscles strong enough for them to use pointe shoes, which allow them to stand on the ; the people at Ballet Mississippi helped with tickets to "The Nutcracker;" Gale Hammond helped with the stationery; Keith Ann Hayes painted the "12 Drummers" painting; Gall Collins showed me the gifts she'd received from Amberly; my husband cut bamboo into pipes; and Amberly rounded up and delivered 11 pipers dressed in coats, hats, and mufflers. The pipers included Anna Grace Heimer, Emma Helmet, Ellie Bond, Emma Bond, Parker Gleason, Abby Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.
