The professional midwife.

The following statement was prepared by the Interroganizational Work-Group on Midwifery Education at the meeting held in Dallas, Texas June 7-9, 1991. It was unanimously signed by all members of the Workgroup and is being put before the members of the ACNM and MANA for approval. The most recent meeting took place in Dallas on September 27-29.

Scope of Practice

The professional midwife is a primary care provider who independently renders comprehensive reproductive health care to women and newborns in her community. The midwife works with each womand and her family to identify their unique physical social and emotional needs. Midwifery care occurs within a variety of settings and includes education and health promotion. When the care required extends beyond her abilities, the midwife arranges for consultation, referral, continued involvement, and collaboration.

Standards and Qualifications

* A professional midwife is prepared for practice through a variety of educational routes that have been approved by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) or The Midwives' Alliance of North America (MANA).

* A professional midwife practices in accord with MANA or ACNM Standards.

* A professional midwife demonstrates accountability to the women she serves.

* A professional midwife participates in activities that promote current knowledge, such as continuing education and peer review.

Legal Recognition

All jurisdictions should provide licensure or registration for professional midwives who meet the above criteria.
