The problem with protein.

Say it ain't so.

Fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, sugar. Those we know we shouldn't eat. But protein? Does our national fondness for meat, poultry, fish, and dairy - even low-fat - lead to cancer, heart disease, brittle bones, and worn-out kidneys?

If you read popular authors like John Robbins or John McDougall, you might think so. As it turns out, if you have high cholesterol, switching from animal protein to plant protein could help lower it . . . in some cases dramatically. But the connection between protein and cancer, osteoporosis, and kidney disease is less clear - especially for healthy Americans.

Even so, one thing is certain: if you think that the more protein you eat, the better . . . you're wrong.
