("The Valiant Vendeans," June 17th issue). I don't believe his intent was to downgrade the Huguenots. One of my great grandfathers by the name of Munch was among those slain during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre thousands of French Huguenots murdered for their faith (1572). [Fr. Hist.: EB, VII: 775] See : Massacre . Actually the massacre continued for two to three weeks. Various estimates give the total killed from 10,000 to 12,000. Some sources say the motivation was political rather than religious. My grandfather had become powerful politically in the Huguenot movement and was a close friend of Adm. Coligny, who was a prime target of the instigators of the massacre. My ancestors were among the estimated 300,000 Huguenots who fled to Germany.
