Iron Therapy

Do you suffer from low iron? Are you taking iron replacement therapy? Is it working? Or do you continue to have low iron in spite of iron supplementation? It could be drug related. Patients who take medications called "proton pump inhibitors Proton Pump Inhibitors Definition

," such as Prevacid, Protonix and Prilosec may actually be interfering with their iron replacement therapy. Make sure you inform your physician of all the medications you are taking, especially if they are over the counter.

Women's Health Issues

Iron Deficiency

Up to 80% of female athletes may be iron deficient. Daily supplementation is recommended, as low iron stores can be associated with a significant decline in aerobic performance capacity.

Exercise and Pregnancy

Can you exercise during pregnancy? Absolutely! In fact, women who exercise throughout their pregnancy have shorter labor, decreased medical intervention during delivery and quicker recovery following childbirth.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis causes over one million fractures a year. How do you know if you're at risk? Traditional risk factors for osteoporosis include:

* White or Asian ethnicity

* Low body weight

* Family history of osteoporosis

* Smoking

* Alcoholism

* Corticosteroid corticosteroid /cor·ti·co·ster·oid/ (-ster´oid) any of the steroids elaborated by the adrenal cortex (excluding the sex hormones) or any synthetic equivalents; divided into two major groups, the glucocorticoids and  medications, as in prednisone prednisone (prĕd`nĭsōn): see corticosteroid drug.  

* Inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake

* Estrogen deficiency

* Inadequate exercise

If you believe you're at risk for osteoporosis, talk to your physician.
