You've done part of the process, but there are a few more things you need to do. Call the customer service department again. Reconfirm that your balance is zero, and then notify them that you are canceling the card. Then write a letter stating that you want to close the account immediately. Be sure to include the information from your conversation, the account number The number assigned to an employee, customer, vendor or product for identification. Although it may contain only numeric digits, it is often stored as a character field, so that parts of the account number can be searched independently. For example, the number could contain a territory code, and records could be selected by state or region., and your billing address. Send the letter by certified mail or with a return receipt request. Then, wait 30 to 45 days and get a copy of your credit report Credit Report A detailed report of an individual's credit history prepared by a credit bureau and used by a lender to in determining a loan applicant's creditworthiness, including: to confirm that the balance is zero. 1. Personal data (current and previous addresses, social security number, employment history) 2. Summary of credit history (number and type of accounts that are past-due or in good standing) 3. Detailed account information 4. If you haven't received your credit report in the last year, order a free report from www.annualcreditreport.com. If you have received your report recently, order a copy from www.myfico.com. In general it's better to leave an account open if you don't intend to use it because closing it could lower your credit score. If all else fails, file a complaint. Contact the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) and your state's attorney general's office.
