The needs of St. George's diocese.

I want to thank Catholic Insight for its continuously excellent presentation of news, features, and articles of interest to Catholic readership. There is such edifying ed·i·fy

reading month after month that I scarcely find time to adequately respond and thank you.

Fr. Daniel Callam's concise and compelling summary of Vatican II Noun 1. Vatican II - the Vatican Council in 1962-1965 that abandoned the universal Latin liturgy and acknowledged ecumenism and made other reforms

Vatican Council - each of two councils of the Roman Catholic Church
, in your November issue, was both instructive and helpful, as he presented the Council in broad historic context, relating the threats to humanity identified by John XXIII John XXIII, pope

in Salutis humanae and the larger history of Councils in the Church, to the time of the Fathers.

I always enjoy the reports by Monsignor Foy, who so ably defends Catholic morality, despite the efforts of the Canadian theological experts who held such sorry sway over Canadian bishops, when our pastors misguidedly issued their 1968 Winnipeg Statement The Winnipeg Statement is the Canadian Bishops' Statement on the Encyclical Humanae Vitae from a Plenary Assembly held at Saint Boniface in Winnipeg, Manitoba. .

But I am particularly .grateful for another reference in the January issue, that deals with one of the more serious plights currently faced by the Church in Canada. Thank you for summarizing the situation faced by Bishop Crosby and the onerous cross born by all the members of the diocese of St. George, Newfoundland. This must be the first time ever that a Catholic diocese in Canada is facing bankruptcy. The diocese's severe financial straits are the result of the decision of the Supreme Court of Canada The Supreme Court of Canada (French: Cour suprême du Canada) is the highest court of Canada and is the final court of appeal in the Canadian justice system.[1]  that found the Episcopal Corporation of St. George "directly and vicariously liable" for the victims of sexual abuse....

I am so glad to be able to contribute to the efforts of the "Friends of Bishop Doug Crosby" from the Diocese of Hamilton, led by Frs. Edward House and Roger Formosi. My brother Leo Blain blain

that I first heard of the plight faced by Bishop Crosby and the details of the settlement and the fallout for his diocese in Newfoundland. I am glad to respond and join the efforts of a few men working with Leo because, as Catholic businessmen, we have been blessed not only in faith, but also in the fruits of our labour. Leo is almost half way to his goal in raising $100,000. What I contribute is a merely a paltry sum in return for all that I have been given. Any other interested donors may contact: Leo F.
