The mother of all pregnancy books: aAn all-Canadian guide to conception, birth and everything in between. (Media Reviews). The Mother of All Pregnancy Books: An All-Canadian Guide to Conception, Birth and Everything in Between by Ann Douglas, [C] 2000; Macmillan Canada, $24.99 Canadian For all Canadian birth professionals and mothers, this is a wonderfully refreshing look at pregnancy and birth through the eyes of a Canadian. This book is very thorough in that it covers the important, and sometimes difficult, subjects of conception, pregnancy, and birth. Poignant information is interspersed with insights, advice, and wisdom from mothers, folklore folklore, the body of customs, legends, beliefs, and superstitions passed on by oral tradition. It includes folk dances, folk songs, folk medicine (the use of magical charms and herbs), and folktales (myths, rhymes, and proverbs). , and medicine. With a great sense of humor Noun 1. sense of humor - the trait of appreciating (and being able to express) the humorous; "she didn't appreciate my humor"; "you can't survive in the army without a sense of humor" sense of humour, humor, humour , Ann Douglas has taken the sometimes dry reading that pregnancy books can be and breathed new life into it. Although at times I didn't agree with her (such as her statement that doctors don't induce without a reason and will rarely induce for their convenience), she has done a good job of providing a lot of information in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format for clients. The information she provides is well-researched and balanced (for example, information about home versus hospital birth) and she provides many examples of women's experiences from across Canada Across Canada was an afternoon program that formerly aired on The Weather Network. The segment ran from early 1999 until mid 2002. The show ran from 3:00PM ET until 7:00 PM ET. . I wish, though, that she would have looked more in-depth into certain subjects such as posterior posterior /pos·ter·i·or/ (pos-ter´e-er) directed toward or situated at the back; opposite of anterior. pos·te·ri·or adj. 1. Located behind a part or toward the rear of a structure. presentation and avoiding interventions. She could have been less glib in terms of mothers' concerns during pregnancy. She glossed over some real fears and fails to explain the realities of labor (she discusses the "laborland" disconnection dis·con·nect v. dis·con·nect·ed, dis·con·nect·ing, dis·con·nects v.tr. 1. To sever or interrupt the connection of or between: disconnected the hose. 2. without explaining what causes it). She also provides a list of "labor problems," which includes "unusually small pelvis small pelvis n. The cavity of the pelvis below the brim or below the superior aperture. Also called pelvis minor, true pelvis. " and Bandl's rings Bandl's rings tonic, cuff-like contractions of the uterus about the fetus. (which are extremely rare). Although I would love to endorse a Canadian publication, this one has fallen short of my expectations, (though it is truly light years ahead of What to Expect When Your Expecting). Watch for Ann Douglas's upcoming books The Mother of All Baby Books and The Mother of All Pregnancy Books, with U.S. editions out later this year. |
