The mid-Hudson Valley, sleepy home of Rip Van Winkle, is suddenly hopping.
* The mid-Hudson Valley, sleepy home of Rip Van Winkle, is suddenly
hopping. First came New Paltz mayor Jason West, the gay-marrying
26-year-old house painter. Now comes Alexander Bulay, a local
movie-theater owner. Bulay ran a radio ad that said: "Hollywood has
gone insane, and our values are not often reflected on the silver
screen. [But] while we can't bring back the Hollywood of John Wayne
... the Lyceum Cinemas in Red Hook, the Roosevelt Cinemas in Hyde Park,
and the New Paltz Cinemas all refused to play Michael Moore's
Fahrenheit 9/11 this year." This prompted a boycott from the local
Green party, which accused Bulay of racism, because of Indian and
Mexican villains in John Wayne movies. Who is racist, though--the Duke,
or the Greens, who want brown people to be ruled by Saddam and the
Taliban? If you want to see Ocean's 12, and you live nearby, stick
a thumb in the eye of the scolds.
