, the cabbages are thick on the ground. Van Gogh's young parents concentrate on the work of love: teaching their child to walk. Love is essentially active, intent upon the needs of the other, and the rough intensity of Van Gogh's clumsy forms expresses the dedication of the parents. Spade and wheelbarrow stand idle and forgotten; both parents are conscious of nothing but the needs of their child. The fruitfulness of the setting is highly appropriate: The child is the fruit of love, and the parents' work is bringing the child to maturity.
