Business Objects The release of Business Objects XI in January 2005 completed the integration of the company's analysis tools and applications with the BI reporting suite it acquired with its takeover of Crystal Decisions in 2003. As part of XI, the company has tapped the renewed enthusiasm for ETL tools with a new version of its Data Integrator product.

Cognos Cognos characterises much of what it offers as corporate performance management, but that breaks down into specific - and highly popular - tools for reporting, analysis and data integration/ETL as well as applications for core financial management.

Computer Associates CA provides an integrated set of tools for reporting, decision support, data transformation and predictive analytics, alongside a highly rated portal product and a business process management engine.

Hummingbird Sitting alongside Hummingbird's content management offerings are a set of query, OLAP-based analysis, ETL and web-based query and reporting tools.

Hyperion Solutions Hyperion has leveraged its strong heritage in analytical applications for financial management and its 2003 acquisition of BI tools vendor Brio to build a broad and integrated performance management suite covering (on the applications side) modelling, planning budgeting, forecasting, consolidation and reporting and (in BI) query and reporting, analysis and performance metrics.

IBM IBM has consistently focused its BI activities at the data management (rather than tools and applications) layer. Aside from providing one of the core BI platforms in the form of DB2, it has expanded its portfolio with its acquisition of Alphablox, for analytical component building, and Ascential, a major vendor of data integration software.

Informatica A pioneer of data integration software, Informatica offers tools for building data warehouses, migrating data and consolidating and synchronising multiple data sources.

Information Builders With its WebFocus suite for analysis and reporting and the iWay range for data integration, Information Builders has one of the broadest offerings in BI, with users particularly praising the scalability of its reporting and the breadth of its integration capabilities.

Jinfonet Software Signalling the trend towards sowing BI into business processes, Jinfonet offers embedded Java-based reporting.

Kalido A pioneer of master data management (even before the phrase was coined), Kalido provides an application suite for managing master data and automating the creation and lifecycle management of data warehouses.

Microsoft Microsoft will beef up its BI and data warehousing line-up with the late summer release of SQL Server 2005. Alongside a completely rewritten ETL product, Integration Services, are upgraded versions of Analysis Services and Reporting Services, It is also adding BI Development Studio, for building BI applications that work across all its BI offerings, and Server Management Studio, for managing BI data. Separately, the company offers analytic capabilities for its four mid-market business applications.

MicroStrategy The fastest growing of all the major BI vendors, MicroStrategy has executed a strong revival of both its finances and its product line. Version 8 of the eponymous product extends its capabilities as a tightly integrated and highly scalable BI suite, with special appeal to high-end retailers.

NCR Teradata Teradata leads the market for high-end data warehouse platforms with its parallel query engine for NCR and Windows servers. The company also provides data mining tools.

Netezza Netezza has developed a low-cost, high-performance data warehouse appliance based on proprietary hardware and a heavily customised open source database.

Oracle After several years of weak enthusiasm for BI (other than the use of its database for data warehouses), Oracle is now back with a major refresh of its product line. Business Intelligence 10g, which shipped in March 2005, has enhanced functionality across its reporting, analysis, ETL and application development modules, a consistent user interface and an Excel add-in. Alongside BI 10g, Oracle provides a series of analytical applications for financial, sales and performance analysis.

OutlookSoft A vendor of Windows-based performance management software, covering planning, budgeting, forecasting, consolidation, analysis, reporting and scorecarding.

Sand Technology Sand offers a high-end data warehouse platform for building analytic applications.

White Cross White Cross provides a BI database designed to process vast amounts of granular data at very high speeds. It does so by processing data in parallel across multiple blade servers, offering that either as a packaged product or a hosted service.
