The god of global dance.Anyone who went to Jacob's Pillow this summer was greeted with an elegant tribute to Ted Shown in Blake's Barn. "Ted Shawn Noun 1. Ted Shawn - United States dancer and choreographer who collaborated with Ruth Saint Denis (1891-1972) Shawn First," lovingly assembled as·sem·ble v. as·sem·bled, as·sem·bling, as·sem·bles v.tr. 1. To bring or call together into a group or whole: assembled the jury. 2. by Norton Nor·ton , Charles Eliot 1827-1908. American educator, writer, and editor who founded the Nation (1865). Owen from the Pillow's archives, showed not only vintage photos and films, but also fascinating items like bejeweled be·jew·eled or be·jew·elled adj. Decorated with or as if with jewels. cuffs that were worn on the upper arms and shins in 1922 for The Siamese Ballet. Clearly one of Shawn's "firsts" was to bring world dance--including Hopi, Japanese, and Far East dances-to the stage. Representing Shawn's Cosmic Dance of Siva were the Dance Magazine cover from 1928 (above) and a huge circle-of-flames set made of heavy metal modeled on a 12th-century bronze of the dancing Siva. |
