It keeps my feet from getting splits. I'll take a lifetime supply, or at least enough to give some to all the dancers I know." When shopping for friends, June likes to find treasures in vintage and thrift shops. Mark Morris company members can also look forward to a packet of photos she took throughout the year. But shopping for Mark takes a little more time. "It has to be perfect. He has a huge collection of tchotchkes, so I have to iliad him a real treasure." And if she had all the money in the world? "I would give everyone a raise." BRIAN "FOOTWORK" GREEN, HIP HOP TEACHER AND CHOREOGRAPHER The most meaningful gift that Green was ever given still hangs on his wall. "My mother wrote me a letter about how good a son I am. It was definitely the best present anyone could have given me." Green has a knack for gift-giving himself. "We are very close, but we don't get to see each other that often. So when we do get together, we run around, act crazy, and drink champagne." She believes it's more important to spend time with friends and family than it is to buy everyone gifts. Dance-focused organizations like Dancers Responding to AIDS (see p. 76) and Career Transitions For Dancers (www.careertransitions.org) are one way to support the dance community. Here are some others: JEANNE RUDDY DANCE A breast cancer survivor, Ruddy has built a company in North Philadelphia that gives back to the local community. They offer a free childrens' matinee performance to students from a local school, and company members also go into area public schools to teach free afterschool dance classes, www.ruddydance.org THE ANDREA RIZZO MEMORIAL FOUNDATION Three years ago Susan Rizzo's daughter Andrea, a cancer survivor and aspiring dance therapist, was killed by a drunk driver. To continue her daughter's legacy, her mother created a foundation to establish dance therapy programs for children with cancer and special needs.
