The first time I met Evelyn Kreason was on a cruelly cold Michigan Michigan (mĭsh`ĭgən), upper midwestern state of the United States. It consists of two peninsulas thrusting into the Great Lakes and has borders with Ohio and Indiana (S), Wisconsin (W), and the Canadian province of Ontario (N,E).  day. It was January 1972, and her company, then called the Suburban Concert Ballet, was being adjudicated for the first Mid-States Regional Ballet Festival. In 1973, the company became the Michigan Ballet Theatre. It performed annually in regional festivals until Kreason's retirement in 1990.

Kreason, born on March 18, 1922, died at 79 on May 22, 2001. She cared deeply about the regional ballet movement, serving as president of the Mid-States and as its representative on the board of the National Association for Regional Ballet. In 1982, her own region gave her its Dorothy Alexander Award for distinguished service, named after the founder of NARB NARB National Advertising Review Board
