The first step.

While Google-ing for historical background on warnings of the addiction to oil that president Bush alluded to in his State of the Union speech, I realized it isn't significant as to who or how many discussed the dependence before. What is significant this time, is that it's coming from a president and administration with strong ties to the oil industry.

Like many addicts, Uncle Sam Uncle Sam, name used to designate the U.S. government. The term arose in the War of 1812 and seems at first to have been used derisively by those opposed to the war. Possibly it was an expansion of the letters "U.S.  has done this before. The easy-to-get-around corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards are the result of an earlier awakening. And just like many addicts, when prices fell and availability was assured, there wasn't a problem. Now that prices are at record highs and demand increases daily, the problem has re-emerged in the conscience of the body politick pol·i·tick

are out of the loop. They are still pushing gas guzzling behemoths because they have no alternatives. It appears that the way they intend to compete is to shutter more and more facilities.

It is time for a government-industry initiative similar to the synthetic rubber synthetic rubber: see rubber.  program in the 1940s to develop non-gasoline driven vehicles. The success of that program shows this type of cooperation can work. It has to be government driven because the auto companies are incapable of such an undertaking on their own. We should have a government commitment on the scale that President Kennedy initiated with the moon landing program. It has to be done.
