The first Earth Day without its founder, three-term Democratic senator and former Wisconsin governor Gaylord Nelson Gaylord Anton Nelson (June 4, 1916 – July 3, 2005) was a Democrat American politician from Wisconsin. He was the principal founder of Earth Day. In 1970, he called for Congressional hearings on the safety of combined oral contraceptive pills, which were famously called "The .
