of moving to the country. There he plans to build a state-of-the-art eco-friendly house--with his own hands, as much as possible. Which is just what you'd expect from a man who thinks running a hundred-mile ultramarathon ultramarathon Sports medicine A footrace that is longer–eg, > 50 miles/80 km–than a marathon–26.2 miles/42 km. As the saying goes, however, while Ed may be gone he won't soon be forgotten. Ed has left a deep and (with any luck) permanent imprint on the magazine, in its tradition of integrity, intellectual reach, strong writing, bold and informative subject matter, and high production values Production values is a media term for "production cost." It refers to the professional look, or "polish," of a production. Factors that affect perceived production value may include video and audio quality, lighting, number of errors, and amount and quality of special effects. . His distinctive voice won't be lost to our readers, either, as we hope to publish an essay by him from time to time.

Meanwhile, we are very happy to announce that Worldwatch Research Associate Lisa Mastny has agreed to join the magazine staff as Senior Editor. Lisa has masters degrees in international relations international relations, study of the relations among states and other political and economic units in the international system. Particular areas of study within the field of international relations include diplomacy and diplomatic history, international law,  and environmental management from Yale University, has worked at the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and , and has a proven record of excellence and versatility within Worldwatch's Research Department. Coupled with Art Director Lyle Rosbotham's consistently exceptional work in art and design, these assets prepare us to build on what Ed Ayres has accomplished. We plan to bring readers more features in each issue, a new department or two (including Talking Pictures, pp. 24 and 25, and Groundwork, which will explore key environmental and ecological ideas; see page 16 for the inaugural column), exciting new writers, and new ideas from the established thinkers in the environmental and social justice fields.

That we cherish our current readership should go without saying. At the same time, we feel it's vital to reach out to new audiences in order to expand the dialogue about the issues that shape humanity's future, and our planet's. We will be exploring ways to do this and the future content of World Watch will reflect this experimentation. But new or old, our readers will continue to set the bar for us. As always, we welcome your comments.
