Tahiti Tahiti (tähē`tē), island (2002 pop. 169.674), South Pacific, in the Windward group of the Society Islands, French Polynesia. The capital is Papeete.  may well be a Polynesian paradise, but it comes at a steep price for accommodations, dining, and the rest of the tropical experience. Less expensive alternatives (Tahiti's beauty on a smaller scale, easily accessible, very friendly people, and much more affordable) are Rarotonga Rarotonga (rärōtông`gä, rărətŏng`gə), formerly Goodenough's Island, volcanic island (2006 pop. 15,153), 26 sq mi (67 sq km), South Pacific, capital of the Cook Islands. , Aitutaki, and the rest of the Cook Islands, due west of French Polynesia French Polynesia, officially Territory of French Polynesia, internally self-governing overseas country (2002 pop. 245,516) of France, consisting of 118 islands in the South Pacific. The capital is Papeete, on Tahiti. . The Cooks are Tahiti Lite--look great, less expensive.
